mousegraphics is not just an award-winning design studio. It is the studio ranked No 1 in the world by Pentawards — the definitive global authority in packaging design. When a studio at this level designs its own website and hands you the files, the brief carries an implicit clause that no contract needs to spell out: every pixel will be checked. By the sharpest design eyes in the business. Our job was to build it so there would be nothing to find.

Most web projects involve some negotiation between design intent and technical reality. A spacing that shifts slightly at a breakpoint. A font rendering that differs marginally between browsers. An interaction that behaves "close enough" to the mockup. In a typical project, these small compromises pass unnoticed. In this project, there was no such thing as unnoticed.

mousegraphics has spent more than forty years building one of the most decorated portfolios in international packaging design — work for Danone, Nongfu Spring, Volvic, ION and brands across four continents, recognised with Studio of the Year titles from both Pentawards and the Dieline Awards, culminating in the No 1 position in Pentawards' world top 20 league in 2023. A studio with this trophy cabinet does not delegate design decisions. When they rebuilt their digital home, they designed every detail themselves — the typography, the grid, the whitespace, the way each project tile breathes. What they needed from us was something specific and, in its own way, rare: a development partner capable of implementing a master designer's vision without diluting it.

The Brief: Development Only — And That's the Point

We want to be precise about our role in this project, because the precision is the story. eproductions did not design mousegraphics.eu. The design — every layout decision, every typographic choice, every interaction concept — belongs entirely to the mousegraphics team. Our engagement was development only: taking the studio's finished design and translating it into a fast, flawless, maintainable WordPress website.

In the agency world, "development only" is sometimes treated as the lesser half of a web project — the mechanical execution that follows the creative act. This project is the strongest possible argument against that view. Implementing a design authored by the world's top-ranked design studio is not mechanical. It is a discipline of fidelity: understanding the intent behind every decision in the design files, anticipating how that intent must survive contact with real browsers, real screen sizes and real content — and engineering the result so the design arrives in the visitor's browser exactly as the designer conceived it.

The inversion worth noticing: in most projects, the developer's client cannot articulate why a layout feels wrong — they just sense it. Here, the client could articulate it to the millimetre. A studio that judges kerning for a living, that has won global awards on the strength of visual precision, reviews a website build the way a master watchmaker inspects a movement. This is the most demanding QA environment a development team can work in — and the most clarifying. There is no ambiguity about the standard.

The Two Technical Challenges

Challenge 01
Absolute design fidelity across every device and browser
The mousegraphics design is built on restraint: a clean portfolio grid, generous whitespace, typography doing quiet, precise work. Minimal design is the hardest to implement faithfully, because there is nowhere for imprecision to hide. A 2-pixel spacing deviation in a dense, busy layout disappears; the same deviation in a minimal layout is a visible flaw. Every margin, every hover state, every transition had to match the approved design with absolute fidelity — on desktop, tablet and mobile, across browsers that each render type and spacing slightly differently by default.
Challenge 02
An extensive, image-heavy international portfolio — without weight
The homepage of mousegraphics.eu presents dozens of projects — ZOI in Saudi Arabia, Boozy in Lebanon, Moo and Smör in Brazil, Nongfu Spring and Changbai Snow in China, Asarai in the USA, Gabit in India, Flyte in the UK, Master Lobster in Canada, alongside Greek landmark brands like ION, Karamolegos and Loux. Every project is represented by high-resolution imagery, because for a packaging design studio the image quality is the portfolio. Hundreds of large visuals on a single scrolling surface is precisely the scenario that produces slow, heavy websites — and a slow website was categorically unacceptable for a studio whose brand is precision.
The Solution
A custom WordPress theme built to the studio's exact specifications
We built the site as a fully custom WordPress theme — no page builders, no off-the-shelf theme adapted to fit, no framework bloat. Custom themes are the only way to achieve genuine pixel-level fidelity, because every line of CSS exists to serve this specific design rather than a generic template's assumptions. The portfolio grid architecture was engineered for the studio's specific content model — project tiles with hover behaviour, category context and a scalable structure that accommodates new work as it is added. The image performance problem was solved with a multi-layer optimisation pipeline: modern format conversion, responsive image delivery serving appropriately sized files to each device, and lazy loading that prioritises the visible viewport so the page is instantly usable while the rest of the portfolio loads progressively behind the scroll. The codebase is deliberately lightweight — the engineering equivalent of the studio's design philosophy. Nothing that does not need to be there, is there.

Why Minimal Design Is Maximum Engineering

There is a persistent misunderstanding in web development that minimal websites are simple to build. The opposite is closer to the truth. A visually rich, layered website offers a thousand places for technical imperfection to hide. A minimal website offers none. When a page consists of a logo, a navigation link, a portfolio grid and generous space, then the grid alignment, the typographic rhythm, the loading behaviour and the scroll feel are the entire experience. Every one of those elements is exposed. Every one of them had a design authority checking it.

This is why the mousegraphics build is, in engineering terms, a demonstration project for a specific and undervalued capability: the discipline of building exactly what was designed. Not approximately. Not "faithful to the spirit of." Exactly. The same discipline we applied to the pixel-perfect migration of photographer Dimitris Poupalos' portfolio applies here at even higher stakes — because this time, the eyes doing the final inspection have judged more packaging designs than perhaps any other studio on the planet.

"The footer of mousegraphics.eu carries three words that we consider one of the strongest credentials in our portfolio: 'Developed by eproductions.' When the No 1 design studio in the world puts your name on their own website, it means the build passed the most demanding design review there is."

What This Project Demonstrates

Principle 01
Development-only engagements are a discipline, not a downgrade
When the client brings the design, the development partner's value is measured entirely in fidelity, performance and code quality. There is no creative contribution to hide behind. Agencies that treat implementation as the lesser half of web work produce the small compromises that designers notice immediately. Agencies that treat it as a craft in its own right earn clients like mousegraphics.
Principle 02
The best test of a development team is a client who can see everything
Most clients evaluate a website by feel. A design studio evaluates it by knowledge — they know what they specified, and they can see precisely where an implementation deviates. Building for designers is the closest thing web development has to peer review. It raises the standard of the work, permanently.
Principle 03
Image-heavy portfolios and fast loading are not in conflict — with the right pipeline
The assumption that a visual portfolio must be heavy is an engineering failure, not a law of nature. Modern image formats, responsive delivery and viewport-priority loading allow hundreds of high-resolution visuals to coexist with instant perceived performance. For any business whose product is visual — design studios, photographers, architects, fashion brands — this pipeline is the difference between a portfolio that impresses and one that gets abandoned mid-load.
Principle 04
A custom theme is the only honest answer to a custom design
Adapting an off-the-shelf theme to approximate a bespoke design always produces residue — unused code, layout compromises, behaviour that fights the design instead of serving it. When the design matters at the level it matters to mousegraphics, the theme must be built from zero, for this design alone. That is what we did.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does "development only" mean in a web project?+-

In a development-only engagement, the client provides the complete, finished design — typically as design files specifying every layout, spacing, typography and interaction decision — and the development partner's role is to implement that design as a working website with total fidelity. The developer contributes engineering decisions (architecture, performance strategy, CMS structure, code quality) but not design decisions. This model is common when the client is itself a design authority — a design studio, a brand with a strong in-house creative team, or an organisation working with a separate design agency — and it demands a specific implementation discipline: the measure of success is that the live website is indistinguishable from the approved design.

Who is mousegraphics?+-

mousegraphics is an Athens-based packaging and brand design studio with more than 40 years of expertise, widely regarded as one of the leading packaging design studios in the world. The studio was ranked No 1 in the world top 20 league 2023 by Pentawards — the most prestigious global competition in packaging design — and has been named Studio of the Year by Pentawards (2017, 2018) and by the Dieline Awards (2015, 2016, 2018). Its international portfolio includes work for Danone, Nongfu Spring, Volvic, ION, Karamolegos and Loux, with projects for brands in China, the USA, the UK, Brazil, Canada, India, Lebanon and Saudi Arabia.

Why build a custom WordPress theme instead of adapting an existing one?+-

An existing theme is built around its own design assumptions — grid systems, spacing scales, typographic defaults, component behaviours. Adapting it to match a bespoke design means fighting those assumptions with override upon override, producing a heavier codebase, slower performance and inevitable small deviations from the intended design. A custom theme inverts this: every line of code exists specifically to implement this design. For projects where design fidelity is the primary requirement — as it was for mousegraphics — a custom theme is the only approach that can deliver pixel-perfect results without technical compromise.

How do you keep an image-heavy portfolio website fast?+-

Through a multi-layer image optimisation pipeline rather than any single technique. Source images are converted to modern formats (WebP, AVIF) that preserve visual quality at substantially smaller file sizes. Responsive image delivery serves each visitor a file sized appropriately for their screen — a mobile visitor never downloads a desktop-resolution asset. Lazy loading prioritises the images in the current viewport so the page becomes usable immediately, while content further down the scroll loads progressively as the visitor approaches it. Combined with a lightweight custom codebase and proper caching, this allows a portfolio of hundreds of high-resolution images to load with the immediacy of a text page.
